Shining a light on Movies from the the Silver Screen

On May 13th 2023, the Catskill Symphony Orchestra and Choral Society will host a “Music from the Silver Screen” concert at SUNY Oneonta. Featuring scores from legendary films including Lord of the Rings, Young Frankenstein, and Star Wars, it is guaranteed to be a night of beautiful music, fond memories, and fun. In preparation for the concert, our Music Director Maestro Żółtowski spoke with Eric Malinowski at CNYNews.com to talk about his enthusiasm for “Music from the Silver Screen” and his passion for film scores.

Żółtowski is all smiles when speaking with Malinowski about “Music from the Silver Screen” saying he is “very excited about the upcoming concert”. Having an extensive background in conducting music for film, he wants to treat the CSO community with an unforgettable performance. He shares how the CSO is thrilled to be joined by our family members at the Catskill Choral Society once again, saying “With our full orchestra and Choral Society, there will be over 100 musicians on stage performing this beautiful music…it will be fascinating”.

In the interview, Malinowski takes note of Żółtowski’s passion when speaking about the pieces that will be performed. He asks, “Where did the idea for ‘Music from the Silver Screen’ come from?” Żółtowski discusses his personal connection with music for film, saying he worked in movie production for several years as a music director, arranger, conductor, and even as an actor. “It was always captivating,” he says to Malinowski. “The heightened tension in everyone’s brains and hands at that moment when it all comes together…it is extraordinary”.

In addition, Żółtowski speaks on the caliber of composers whose music the CSO and Choral Society will be performing. He has always been fascinated with film scores and has a deep appreciation for Hollywood’s famous composers, such as Miklós Rózsa, Franz Waxman, and John Williams. “Miklós Rózsa was a devout classical composer who has made a name for himself in Hollywood…He’s won three Oscars, one of which is for his Ben Hur Suite that we will be performing at the concert”. He also references Franz Waxman and his work for The Bride of Frankenstein, calling it “brilliantly captivating”.

By creating the “Music from the Silver Screen” concert, Żółtowski is sharing something personal and close to his heart with the CSO family. As he has said before, he is grateful for how our community has supported him as the Music Director for the CSO these past few years. To conclude our 2022-2023 season, he is taking the opportunity to share a part of his musical past with our members, and to experience a night of mutual love for film scores.
